Joining Microsoft means becoming part of an ecosystem where your work directly influences billions of users worldwide. Whether you are designing the next generation of AI accelerators, optimizing power‑efficiency for edge devices, or shaping the architecture that powers cloud‑scale workloads, your impact will be felt across the entire tech landscape. Why This Role Is Different This is not just another engineering position. As a Senior Design Engineer for the AI Silicon Architecture team , you will be a cornerstone of a high‑performing, globally distributed group that delivers world‑class AI‑enabled silicon solutions. You will have the autonomy to own complex design challenges, mentor junior engineers, and drive cross‑functional initiatives—all while enjoying the flexibility of a fully remote work‑from‑home arrangement with a competitive hourly rate of $23. Key Responsibilities Architectural Leadership: Define and drive the architecture of AI‑SoC components, focusing on high‑performance compute blocks, high‑bandwidth memory interfaces, and power‑efficient design strategies. RTL Development & Verification: Lead Register Transfer Level (RTL) coding, implement rigorous verification plans, and ensure compliance with design specifications, CDC, RDC, and timing closure for high‑speed IP. Cross‑Team Collaboration: Partner with physical design, verification, test, and software teams to validate that architectural intent translates into silicon that meets performance, area, and power targets. Technical Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence. Design Trade‑off Analysis: Conduct comprehensive trade‑off studies, balancing performance, power, area, and cost to deliver optimal solutions. Documentation & Communication: Produce clear, concise design documents, specifications, and status reports for internal stakeholders and external partners. Innovation & Research: Stay abreast of emerging AI hardware trends, actively contribute to research initiatives, and propose novel architectural concepts that keep Microsoft at the forefront of AI silicon. Toolchain Mastery: Utilize industry‑leading EDA tools for synthesis, place‑and‑route, timing analysis, and power estimation, ensuring design integrity throughout the flow. Essential Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred). 5+ years of hands‑on experience in digital ASIC/FPGA design, with a focus on high‑performance or AI‑centric architectures. Proficiency in hardware description languages (Verilog/SystemVerilog) and RTL coding best practices. Strong understanding of computer architecture concepts, including pipelines, parallelism, and memory hierarchy. Demonstrated experience with timing closure, clock domain crossing (CDC), and reset design (RDC) in complex silicon projects. Excellent problem‑solving skills, with a proven track record of navigating design challenges from concept through tape‑out. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling clear articulation of technical ideas to diverse audiences. Self‑motivated, results‑oriented, and comfortable thriving in a remote, highly collaborative environment. Preferred Qualifications Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline. Experience designing AI accelerators, neural network processors, or other machine‑learning‑focused silicon. Familiarity with low‑power design techniques, power gating, and voltage scaling strategies. Knowledge of industry‑standard EDA tools such as Synopsys, Cadence, or Mentor Graphics for synthesis, static timing analysis, and verification. Background in system‑level validation, including hardware/software co‑design and firmware development. Track record of publishing technical papers or contributing to open‑source silicon projects. Experience working in agile development frameworks within hardware teams. Skills & Competencies for Success Technical Acumen: Deep expertise in digital design, verification methodologies, and architectural trade‑offs. Strategic Thinking: Ability to align technical decisions with broader business objectives and product roadmaps. Collaboration: Proven ability to work across functional boundaries, fostering partnership with design, verification, physical, and software teams. Adaptability: Comfort with rapid iteration cycles, evolving requirements, and emerging technologies. Mentorship: Passion for coaching junior talent and cultivating a high‑performing engineering culture. Communication: Clear, concise, and persuasive presentation of complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Ownership: End‑to‑end responsibility for design deliverables, from initial concept through silicon sign‑off. Career Growth & Learning Opportunities Microsoft invests heavily in employee development. As a senior member of the AI Silicon Architecture team, you will have access to: World‑class training programs on advanced AI hardware, emerging EDA tools, and leadership development. Mentorship from industry pioneers who have shaped the evolution of cloud and edge computing. Opportunities to contribute to high‑visibility projects that influence Microsoft’s AI strategy across Azure, Windows, and Surface devices. Clear career pathways toward principal engineering, technical fellowship, or product leadership roles. Internal mobility programs that allow you to explore related domains such as cloud infrastructure, quantum computing, or mixed‑signal design. Work Environment & Company Culture Microsoft’s remote work model is built on trust, flexibility, and inclusion. You will join a globally distributed team that values diverse perspectives and encourages open dialogue. Our virtual collaboration spaces, regular video‑town‑halls, and community‑building initiatives ensure that remote employees stay connected, informed, and empowered. Key cultural pillars include: Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges, learn from feedback, and continuously improve. Customer Obsession: Design with the end‑user in mind, delivering solutions that delight and empower. Inclusivity: Foster an environment where every voice is heard and respected. Innovation: Take calculated risks, experiment with new ideas, and push the boundaries of what silicon can achieve. Compensation, Perks & Benefits Microsoft offers a competitive compensation package that includes: Hourly rate of $23, with eligibility for performance‑based bonuses. Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans for you and your family. Generous paid time off, parental leave, and flexible work‑hour policies. Retirement savings plans with company matching contributions. Employee stock purchase program and equity incentives.
