Role Description The Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) performs data abstraction by capturing a complete patient history, diagnosis, staging, and treatment information for all patients into the cancer registry. β’ Abstracts the following registries: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, and Bladder. β’ Delivers quality solutions to hospital partners across the country. β’ Reviews medical records for each eligible patient to complete the abstract in accordance with ACOS Cancer Program standards and state requirements. β’ Maintains abstracting productivity and quality rates of 98%. β’ Assists with timely monthly reporting to the State ODS, including special studies and audits. β’ Submits cases to Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS) and ensures compliance with quality measures. β’ Assists in the Annual NCDB submission for cases diagnosed on January 2003 or later. β’ Maintains a follow-up program for all required abstracts. β’ Participates in ongoing studies for the American College of Surgeons and local studies. β’ Demonstrates knowledge and skills to operate cancer registry software. β’ Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care accordingly. β’ Collaborates with staff at all campuses to develop opportunities for improvement. β’ Attends educational conferences to maintain certification. β’ Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies. Qualifications β’ Must be currently active working as Oncology Data Specialist (ODS). β’ Must be QUOPI, ACS, APBC Cert and Radiology Oncology Certified. β’ Successful completion of an Associate's degree or equivalent (60 college level credits including 2 semesters of Anatomy & Physiology) OR Certificate in Cancer Registry Management or Cancer Information Management from a NCRA-accredited program. β’ Minimum of 1 year in a related field; cancer, nursing, medical records, or health science. β’ Direct data abstraction experience in the Cancer Registry. β’ Exposure to patient medical record systems (EMRs) and clinical databases. β’ Proficiency with Epic, Oncology & MS Office (Microsoft Excel). β’ A college degree from an accredited nursing program, CAHIIM accredited program, or other accredited healthcare program. β’ Healthcare credential associated with their program of study. β’ Other healthcare information related abstraction and coding credentials desirable. Requirements β’ Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) Certification. β’ Attention to detail and follow-up necessary. β’ Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital staff, physicians, and community resources. β’ Must be able to work independently. β’ Commitment and reliability; able to dedicate consistent time to HIA. β’ Computer literacy, comfortable with Excel, web-browsers, email, and electronic health records. β’ Familiarity with various technologies such as Epic, Oncology, security (e.g., Citrix), data collection/abstraction, encoders, web-based applications. β’ Self-maintenance of skillset and maintaining credentials. β’ Staying current with abstraction/coding rules, manuals, and guidelines. β’ Prior experience in the position applying for. β’ Minimum of 2 years of current experience in ODS. β’ Motivation; ability to work independently in a remote setting. β’ May require Background and Drug Screening.
