Part-Time Remote Reporter / Writer

Location: Remote (Iowa-based preferred)
Nelson Media Company is seeking a part-time remote reporter/writer to contribute stories to our growing group of weekly newspapers across Iowa. This role is ideal for a curious storyteller who enjoys covering the people, events, and issues that shape small-town communities.
Our newspapers focus on hyper-local journalism — highlighting schools, local government, businesses, community events, and feature stories that matter to our readers.
- Responsibilities
- Write articles covering local government meetings, school events, feature stories, and community news
- Conduct interviews with community members, local officials, and business leaders
- Identify and pitch story ideas relevant to our communities
- Produce well-written, accurate, and engaging articles on deadline
- Collaborate with editors and our newspaper team remotely
- Compensation
- Paid per article
- Typical pay ranges from $20–$30 per story, depending on length and complexity
- Qualifications
- Previous writing, journalism, or reporting experience required
- Strong interviewing and storytelling skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and communicate consistently with editors
- Familiarity with small-town or community journalism is a plus
- Iowa-based writers strongly preferred
