The Aeronautical Data Specialist role involves analyzing aeronautical source material and converting it into validated data for charting and digital products, while collaborating with a remote team and ensuring data integrity across multiple domains.
Responsibilities
- Analyze aeronautical sources (electronic documents, digital maps, imagery, authority publications) to determine change impact to Jeppesen datasets/products
- Update Jeppesen production databases/systems based on change impact and defined capture rules
- Execute prescribed QC/QA checks using approved methods and process documentation
- Collaborate with SMEs to draft and route clarification queries to regulatory/aeronautical authorities
- Work effectively in modern, evolving production software and processes
- Collaborate daily with a remote team and global peers supporting worldwide coverage
- Candidates may work across one or multiple domains depending on team assignment and business need:
- Instrument Procedures / Approach Charting: interpret procedure source changes; ensure depiction-/encoding-critical attributes are captured consistently
- NavData: maintain navaids/waypoints/routes; ensure identifier/coordinate/relationship integrity and downstream usability
- Airspace: capture lateral/vertical/time attributes; manage overlaps/hierarchy logic per internal data rules
- Obstacles: capture obstacle attributes and changes; validate outliers and ensure downstream portrayal rules can be applied
Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated aviation domain exposure or strong aviation involvement, such as pilot/student pilot, dispatch/flight following, airport/airline/ANSP/military aviation experience, aviation maintenance/engineering support, aviation education, or consistent use of aeronautical charts/publications in work or training
- Ability to apply detailed guidance/technical specifications to execute delegated tasks; strong attention to detail
- Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools)
- Strong communication, personal accountability, and comfort working in a remote environment
- Ability to read and interpret aeronautical source material (e.g., AIP content, procedure amendments, NOTAMs, authority circulars) and translate it into structured outputs per spec
- Direct aeronautical data / charting / procedure exposure (e.g., instrument procedure interpretation, navdata editing, airspace/obstacle data capture, chart QA)
- Degree or coursework in aviation, geography, cartography, GIS, or equivalent experience
- 1+ years of relevant production/data experience (e.g., aeronautical data, charting, GIS, technical editing) in a spec-driven environment
- Experience with technical writing (queries/clarifications, decision rationale) and/or automation-assisted data production (validation rules, scripting, SQL)
