Position: Summer 2026 Conference Intern (Temporary)

Overview

We are looking for a staff member who is a creative, positive team player with a pioneering spirit and true zest for work in a university summer hospitality program. Interns will help oversee the summer conference Hospitality service program and supervise hospitality staff. Strong leadership, people, organizational, and multitasking skills, plus the ability to work in a busy, fast‑paced environment, are essential.

    The summer 2026 conference program runs from mid‑April through mid‑September. This position is shared with another intern; therefore teamwork, support, and communication are crucial.Responsibilities
  • Lead up to twenty (20) Guest Services Representatives and two Team Leads under the direction of the Event Services management team.
  • Supervise staff, schedule staff for three rotating shifts (24/7) at 1–2 Residence Halls and Apartments, and manage desk operations.
  • Provide training, evaluation, counseling, conflict resolution, crisis management, mediation, discipline, organization, advising, and social justice training to staff.
  • Model professionalism, teach customer service skills, handle guest reservations, check‑ins/check‑outs, conduct staff meetings, and participate in decision‑making processes.
  • Collect and account for all daily cash handling receipts; administer daily front‑desk operations; resolve staff or guest problems.
  • Serve as the on‑call duty contact for emergency problem solving within Residential Halls and apartment areas after typical business hours (5 pm–8 am).
  • Overtime

Mandatory overtime during the first three weeks if cleaning schedule goals are not met for residence halls and apartments in preparation for opening and closing. Additional overtime may be required due to business demands during the summer.

  • Prior work experience in Housing, Event Services, Residence Life, Student Services, or a hotel/hospitality customer service position is required.
  • Supervisory experience in one of these areas is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Seattle Technologies Conference Programmer/IRIS Registration/IRIS Front Desk databases, Person Key Systems, and/or Residence Life is sought but not required.
  • Possession of a current, valid, unrestricted Alaska driver’s license and meeting UA safe driving requirements (if required).
  • FERPA certification or completion within 30 days of start date.
  • Title IX certification or completion within 30 days of start date.
  • Behavior Based Safety (BBS) certification or completion within 30 days of start date.
  • Workplace Harassment Prevention certification or completion within 30 days of start date.
  • Protecting Payment Card Information training (annual).

Location:

University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77 (starting salary $20.47/hour), based on education and experience.
