Job Description

The Davey Tree Expert Company is seeking a Field Utility Designer to support aerial utility design projects through field data collection and remote design analysis. The role involves conducting field audits of electric and telecommunication infrastructure and developing safe, code-compliant solutions in accordance with National Electric Safety Code standards. Responsibilities Conduct field audits of existing electric and telecommunication utility infrastructure by visually identifying, inspecting, measuring (including use of a fiberglass measuring stick), and accurately recording asset information Collect, validate, and document detailed field data using hand-held computers, GPS units, cameras, and other field technology to support aerial utility design work Operate as a lone worker when required or as part of a two-person field team, effectively managing assigned production goals, schedules, and work locations Utilize GIS, Katapult, SpidaCalc (or similar pole loading analysis software), and other utility design platforms to analyze field data and develop compliant aerial utility design solutions Apply engineering principles, National Electric Safety Code (NESC) requirements, and client-specific standards to perform pole loading analysis and ensure safe, code-compliant aerial utility designs Identify and maintain accurate records of existing telecommunication and electric utility infrastructure and equipment within designated software and document management systems Review and correct data integrity errors within GIS and related databases to ensure accuracy and completeness of design deliverables Navigate (in vehicle and on foot) through various terrains and weather conditions utilizing maps, GPS, and other navigation tools Drive, operate, and maintain a company vehicle in a variety of terrains and surfaces; ensure proper care and routine inspection of assigned vehicles and equipment Positively and effectively communicate with property owners, municipalities, utilities, and internal stakeholders to arrange site access, coordinate project requirements, and support timely project completion Recognize unacceptable safety risk conditions and hazards related to field and design work environments, federal standards, and client specifications; comply with all safety regulations and company policies Collaborate with Project Managers, Supervisors, Engineers, Designers, Technicians, and Administrative staff to meet production targets, maintain project timelines, and report progress accurately and timely Skills High school diploma or GED required 1–2 years of experience in utility field data collection, utility design, or related infrastructure environment Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability Experience utilizing GIS platforms and field data collection technology (GPS units, hand-held devices, cameras) Valid driver's license along with a clean Motor Vehicle Report Must attend and pass the Davey Driver's Safety Course Ability to work independently in field environments and navigate various terrains and weather conditions Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet production targets and deadlines Strong communication skills including written and verbal Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos Draft intelligible, professional, and accurate correspondence Effectively and clearly communicate and present information in one-on-one and group Perform basic arithmetic computations Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, and data entry Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field 3-4 years of experience in utility field data collection, utility design, or related infrastructure environment Proficiency in CAD/Outside Plant Engineering design software, and/or PLA software Familiarity with electric utility design standards (NESC) Benefits Group health plans* Short-term and long-term disability insurance* Life insurance* Paid parental leave 401k with up to a 4% company match** Employee Stock Purchase Plan: Opportunity to buy company stock at a 15% discount Holidays and paid time off* Payroll savings plan* Charitable matching gift program* Employee referral bonus program* Employee Educational Scholarship* Davey Family Scholarship* 20% discount on all Davey services* Cell phone discounts* Vehicle purchase discount program* Plus, so much more!
