About the position
The associate counsel will work closely with the general counsel to accomplish the strategic goals and mission of NYSTEC while exhibiting NYSTEC's core values and behaviors. The associate counsel will assist in providing legal guidance and expertise in the areas of labor and employment law (including but not limited to policy writing and review, training, wage and hour auditing, and enforcement) and will help execute strategies to mitigate risk and balance management and employee perspectives.
The associate counsel will also assist the general counsel, where needed, to support and respond to daily requests of NYSTEC employees. Responsibilities • Assist with discrimination cases in federal and state court and/or before administrative agencies, such as the New York State Department of Labor and human rights agencies. • Support the general counsel in providing advice and counsel to management and Human Resources (HR) on employment issues. • Help conduct wage and hour audits. • Research federal and state employment law and analyze complex issues.
• Assist in drafting and revising employment-related documents, such as offer letters, separation agreements, workplace policies and procedures, employee handbooks, and employee communications. • Partner with HR in conducting employment training and completing training audits. • Collaborate with the general counsel in advising management on compliance with contractual obligations, laws, and regulations. • Assist in creating and maintaining effective action plans in response to audit discoveries and compliance violations.
• Serve as a member of NYSTEC's various oversight committees to help ensure appropriate responses and documentation. • Monitor developments of laws and regulatory developments relating to NYSTEC's business and its 501(c)(3) status. • Assist the general counsel with legal research, reviews, and drafting various documents and correspondence, as requested. • Partner with outside counsel when necessary. • Demonstrate the NYSTEC Core Values and Behaviors. • Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements • Demonstrates initiative by contributing ideas and assisting in developing strategies to help maintain the relevance and effectiveness of various NYSTEC functional areas.
• Possesses a foundational understanding of employment law and an interest in building knowledge of company contracts, policies, and operations. • Eager to learn and grow, with strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments. • Familiar with core concepts in employer-side labor and employment law, including policies and standards for client entities (e.g., New York State, New York City, federal government, neighboring states). • Excellent computer skills, including experience using web browsers and bolthires applications (Project, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio, SharePoint) or equivalent.
• Understands NYSTEC's mission, brand mindsets, and core values and can put the behaviors into practice. Nice-to-haves • Experience in healthcare, information technology, consulting, federal government contracting, and/or cybersecurity industries. • Experience working with not-for-profit or nonprofit entities.
