Hunter College Continuing Education Programs (CUNY) seeks bilingual Spanish–English adjunct instructors to teach in our long-standing Translation and Interpretation Studies programs. These non-credit programs prepare adult learners for professional work in translation, court and medical interpretation, and related fields. We welcome candidates with experience in translation, interpretation, or both. Experience in legal and/or medical settings is especially valued. About the Program Hunter offers three certificate programs—Translation Studies, Interpretation Studies, and the Combined Certificate.
Courses emphasize real-world practice, foundational theory, and professional standards. Small class sizes (5–15 students) support guided practice, discussion, and individualized feedback. All instruction is delivered live online via Zoom. Responsibilities • Teach one or more courses in translation or interpretation, depending on experience • Provide live online instruction during scheduled class times • Guide students through weekly skill-based assignments • Offer clear, constructive feedback on student performance • Evaluate students using program-wide grading criteria • Maintain a professional, supportive online learning environment • Coordinate with program staff regarding schedules and expectations Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Interpretation, Spanish, English, Linguistics, or a closely related field • Significant professional experience in translation and/or interpretation • Full professional fluency in Spanish and English • Strong writing and communication skills in both languages • Ability to teach adult learners in a structured, practice-focused curriculum • Comfort using Zoom or similar platforms for synchronous online instruction Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree in a relevant field (Translation, Interpretation, Spanish, English, Linguistics) • Teaching or training experience • Professional experience in legal or medical interpreting • Familiarity with interpreter note-taking, translation theory, editing, or CAT tools • Experience with LMS platforms, particularly Brightspace Work Eligibility / Location Requirement Because Hunter College is part of CUNY, adjunct instructors must reside within a CUNY-approved commutable distance to New York City.
Eligible locations include specific counties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. A full list is available upon request and will be provided during the hiring process.
