Job Description Summary:
Samuel Merritt University College of Nursing (CoN) has adjunct
faculty (Theory and PMHNP Clinical Seminar) opportunities available
at the Oakland campus. These positions are ideal for advanced
practice nurses who have expertise in psychiatric mental health
nursing across the lifespan.
Adjunct faculty are responsible for creating a positive learning
environment for students in accordance with the educational
objectives of the course and implement the policies identified in
the course syllabus to ensure the successful achievement of course
objectives.
- Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates a dynamic, adult learner-centered environment that supports the diverse learning needs of the student population andthat is based on educational theory and evidence-based teachingpractices.
- Models reflective and critical thinking and serves as a coach and mentor for students; confers with them on their progress andassists them in the development of learning plans to facilitatesuccessful achievement of course objectives;
- ( Theory ) Meets with lead program faculty as needed to review the course, student evaluations, and recommendations forchange. ( Clinical ) Meets with preceptor faculty, relevantto the course, prior to the first day of clinical to reviewclinical and course requirements.
- ( Theory ) Completes an appropriate course orientation. (PMHNP Clinical Seminar ) Completes an appropriate clinicalevaluation of the site/s, where the faculty member will beoverseeing students during PMHNP Clinical Seminars; maintains andenhances competence in the clinical area of teaching.
- ( Simulation ) Participates in on-campus (Oakland), 1-day intensive (simulation) per semester scheduled, and OSCEonline simulation during PMHNP Clinical Seminar.
- Plans learning experiences that are appropriate for the level of the students.
- Reviews written assignments and provides appropriate, timely, written feedback; documents student progress on appropriate formsand if necessary provides a learning plan for the attainment ofobjectives.
- Evaluates learner performance and provides ongoing feedback to students on the attainment of course objectives.
- ( Theory ) Apprises students of their progress in the course at the mid-term point, as defined in the syllabus, and forthose who are not meeting expectations, establish a mutual learningplan to achieve stated goals. (PMHNP Clinical Seminar )Completes a formal, written midterm and final evaluation on adesignated form for each student.
- ( Theory ) Submits grades to the Registrar by the appointed date in the Academic Calendar. (PMHNP ClinicalSeminar) Submits the students’ final preceptor clinical evaluationsfor filing to the Program administrative assistant.
- ( Theory ) Notifies the Program Director of at-risk students as soon as identified and at least weekly thereafter. (PMHNP Clinical Seminar) Notifies course lead of at-riskstudents or unusual occurrences in the clinical setting as soon asidentified and at least weekly thereafter.
- ( Theory ) Participates in program faculty meetings as needed. (PMHNP Clinical Seminar ) Participates in facultycourse meetings during the semester.
- Education and Experience:
- Masters in Nursing required
- PMHNP ANCC board certification
- Demonstrated current competence in theory or clinical area
- Effective leadership and communication skills
- Past experience in theory or clinical teaching preferred
- Unencumbered RN license or license eligible in California

determined based on a variety of relevant factors including but not
limited to qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant

Based on teaching assignment, a reasonable estimate for this
position is between $600 - $8000.
