Job Description
I am seeking an experienced, intellectually engaged beta reader to review two already-published self-help books.
This is not a proofreading or line-editing role, but rather a deep reader / publishing-aware critique role. I am looking for someone who can stress-test the ideas, clarity, emotional impact, and commercial positioning of both books.
The goal is to refine these works so they can stand the test of time, both philosophically and in the marketplace.
Book 1:
This book explores meditation, consciousness, awareness, and inner transformation from a non-traditional perspective.
It challenges conventional meditation techniques and instead points toward a direct experiential understanding of presence and being.
The tone is philosophical yet accessible, aimed at readers interested in spirituality beyond dogma, mindfulness trends, or structured belief systems.
Book 2:
This book examines modern relationships, love, commitment, and psychological conditioning around partnership.
It questions inherited societal narratives about marriage and explores how authentic connection can arise from awareness rather than obligation or fear.
The tone is reflective, provocative, and designed to stimulate honest self-inquiry rather than provide formulaic advice.
What I Am Looking For
I am specifically seeking someone who is:
An avid and sophisticated reader
A professional writer, editor, or publishing-aware critic
Ideally someone with literary agent, developmental editing, or book-coaching experience
Familiar with the self-help / spiritual / personal development market
Comfortable giving honest, rigorous, intellectually engaged feedback
Able to evaluate both philosophical depth and commercial readability
Scope of Work
You will:
Provide inline commentary or structured notes
Identify areas where:
The prose could be tightened or clarified
The message may lose reader engagement
The ideas feel particularly original or strong
Evaluate whether the intended transformational goal of each book is achieved
Offer insight into:
Market positioning
Reader psychology
Narrative flow in non-fiction
Long-term shelf appeal
Stress-test the books from the perspective of:
A serious reader
A publishing professional
A commercial non-fiction strategist
This is not a full rewrite project.
I am looking for surgical, high-level refinements, not structural overhaul.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Background in publishing / literary representation / developmental editing
Experience working with self-help, spiritual, or philosophical non-fiction
Strong ability to balance intellectual critique with reader empathy
Comfortable engaging with unconventional or challenging ideas
Deliverables
Written report or annotated manuscript for each book
Summary of strengths, weaknesses, and refinement opportunities
Commercial positioning insights
To Apply
Please include:
Relevant experience in book publishing, editing, or literary critique
Titles of books you have worked on (if applicable)
Your approach to beta reading philosophical or self-help works
Estimated timeline and fixed quote contract for both books
If you are someone who understands both the craft of writing and the psychology of readership, I would be very interested in hearing from you.
