Job Description
- We are a fast-growing educational tutoring center / tech company based in California who is hiring tutors / instructors who are skilled in helping our students in the following three areas:
- College application essay writing process. This is a seasonal role that starts around June 15th, is the busiest in October and November, and is mostly done by December. We have a training process we do every year around June 1.
- SAT English, which is year round but has peaks and valleys throughout the year.
- At least one other subject - In order to keep you busy throughout the year, we require at least one other, non-English subject that you are strong at, such as AP US History, AP World History, AP Biology etc.
Here's how scheduling works. We have time slots where we're open. You set your own general availability against those time slots, such as Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. You're able to adjust that on a week to week basis, although consistency is strongly encouraged.
For college essay, we pair you with a student who is available the same general days as you. You'll work with them for a series of weeks or months to brainstorm, draft and revise their college application essays, such as the Common App, University of California, and supplemental essays. You'll use the Brightfox platform which provides many tools such as managing a list of essays, and character counts for the Activities Lists.
For SAT English and other subjects, we provide a very structured program including a instructor and student curriculum manual, practice problems, analytics, answer explanations and practice tests for students to take.
Brightfox is a 2:1 student to instructor ratio, but with the instructor alternating (not a group class). So it's around 15 minutes, 1:1 with one student, focused on teaching concepts and collaborating directly. Then, the instructor assigns your student work, either their essay work or via the Brightfox curriculum. This is crucial because we need to be able to evaluate whether your student can do the work successfully independently. While one student is working, you rotate over to another student, who is working on another subject entirely. Then you rotates back to the first student. If they did really well on that topic, they'll move on to the next concept. If they struggled, they can stay there. All instructors start out with training, and then start 1:1 only before moving on to 2:1.
