- College-Level Reading & Writing Tutor (Humanities Focus)
- *Please note, this role requires direct experience teaching or tutoring college-level reading and writing (not K–12). Applicants without this experience will not be considered**
About the Role:
We are seeking a thoughtful, experienced educator to support a college student in his humanities coursework, with a strong emphasis on reading comprehension and academic writing. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys working closely with students to break down complex texts, build confidence, and develop strong written communication skills.
The student benefits from structured, scaffolded support and requires a tutor who is patient, highly organized, and experienced in working with learning differences, particularly processing speed challenges.
- What You’ll Do:
- Work one-on-one with a college student on assigned weekly readings across 2 humanities courses
- Guide the student through active reading strategies to ensure comprehension and retention
- Break down complex texts into manageable components and check for understanding
- Support the full writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising
- Provide clear, constructive feedback on written work, with an emphasis on organization, clarity, and argument development
- Scaffold assignments and help the student plan and pace longer-term projects
- Reinforce executive functioning skills, including time management and task initiation
- Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience teaching or tutoring college-level English, writing, or humanities
- Strong background in academic reading and writing instruction
- Experience supporting students with learning challenges, especially processing speed differences
- Ability to scaffold instruction and break down complex material into accessible steps
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Patient, flexible, and able to build rapport with students
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in English, Education, or related field preferred
- Ideal Candidate:
- Has experience working with neurodiverse learners
- Understands how to balance support with building independence
- Is organized, reliable, and proactive in communication
- Enjoys mentoring students and building confidence alongside skills

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
