Are you a licensed health professional living in the Greater NY area looking for a meaningful way to use your skills to support your community during emergencies?
The American Red Cross is seeking Disaster Health Services (DHS) volunteers to help provide care and support to people affected by disasters. From home fires to large-scale emergencies, DHS volunteers play a vital role in meeting the immediate health needs of clients and supporting fellow responders in the field.
What You’ll Do
- As a Disaster Health Services volunteer, you may assist with:
- Providing disaster-related health care and support to affected individuals
- Supporting Disaster Action Team responses, shelters, emergency aid stations, and outreach efforts
- Assisting with recovery planning and casework support during relief operations
- Promoting staff and volunteer wellness during disaster responses
Licensed Registered Nurses and Physicians may also serve as chapter health reviewers and staff wellness leads during operations.
Who Should Apply
- We are looking for individuals with an active, unencumbered license (NY State) in one of the following fields:
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Licensed Practical / Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN)
- Nurse Practitioner or Advanced Practice Nurse
- Physician (MD/DO)
- Physician Assistant
- EMT or Paramedic
Time Commitment
This role is flexible and on-call, activated as needed during disasters. Volunteers can sign up for shifts when local responses occur.
Training Provided
- Red Cross provides training such as:
- Disaster Health Services Fundamentals
- Psychological First Aid
- CPR/AED
- Disaster Action Team & Shelter Fundamentals
