Utah’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Population Health (DPH) is actively seeking a Public Health Modeler (Epidemiologist III) to join our Division Surveillance Team (DST). ! As our Public Health Modeler (Epidemiologist III), you will bring your experience to the position and help make a difference for our DPH team and the customers and clients that you will support.

You will also help the mission and vision of DPH which promotes healthy behaviors, prevents injury and disease, works to connect at-risk people with services, and ensures rapid emergency response to any issue of public health concern. Within DPH, the Division Surveillance Team (DST) serves as a resource to improve collection, access, analysis, and interpretation of data through providing and building technical capacity for analysis, visualization, and modernization of surveillance processes and systems.

Duties: β€’ Design, execute, and validate modeling projects on communicable diseases of interest β€’ Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that our models and analyses are relevant, accurate, and timely β€’ Develop and integrate outbreak analytics tools and platforms that enable rapid analysis, interpretation, visualization, and integration of data to support public health decision-making β€’ Expand and maintain a modeling consortium across state public health, local public health, and our academic partners β€’ Provide expert decision support and interpretation of analytic output, clearly communicating the implications for public health and informing the development of response strategies.

β€’ Present data and findings to a diverse audience, including epidemiologists, decision makers, and the public. β€’ Apply computational and statistical tools and algorithms for cleaning, analysis, and visualization of data. β€’ Develop modeling capacity and literacy among epidemiologists at the state and local level β€’ Any other duties as required. Qualifications: β€’ Has a Master’s degree or higher in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a related field. β€’ Has experience developing and running various models including forecasting and simulation models, with preference for model development for public health.

β€’ Has experience using R and R Shiny for data cleaning, analysis, and visualization. β€’ Has strong quantitative, biostatistical, and data analysis skills β€’ Displays a high level of initiative, including the ability and willingness to take ownership of work, recognize assignments or tasks that need to be completed, seek out additional assignments or tasks, and help others. β€’ Communicates in a way that builds relationships and fosters collaborative work. Tailors the mode and content of communication to both technical and non-technical colleagues in and outside of the organization Working Conditions: β€’ The typical office setting for this job is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.

However, you may encounter some risks that are associated with any office setting, for example, the safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc. β€’ Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Physical Requirements: β€’ Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work Notes: β€’ Continued employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
