About the position

The

Senior Attorney / Assistant Attorney position within the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) involves a range of legal responsibilities related to environmental law and policy. The role includes negotiating enforcement matters, representing the department in hearings, and assisting in litigation. The position is part of the NY HELPS program, allowing for non-competitive appointments, and offers opportunities for career advancement within the legal field.

Responsibilities • Negotiate and implement enforcement matters including Orders of consent. • Represent the Department at permit and enforcement hearings. • Assist the Attorney General in litigation involving the Department. • Respond to Freedom of Information Law requests. • Communicate effectively with the regulated public, other agencies, co-workers, and court officers. Requirements • Graduate of an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree. • Eligibility to take the New York State Bar examination.

• Strong advocacy, research, and writing skills. • Excellent communication skills in person, writing, and on the telephone. Nice-to-haves • Experience in environmental law or related fields. • Familiarity with freshwater wetlands, fish and wildlife, and hazardous substances.
