Job Description
Dear Tax Accountants,
We’re a growing firm looking for a Tax Specialist who wants more ownership over their work than a traditional firm allows. This is a tax-first role with accounting and client development responsibilities — you’ll handle returns end-to-end, work directly with clients, help bring in new business, and have real input into how the firm operates.
- What we offer now:
- Fully remote — U.S.-based, work from anywhere
- Paid time off
- Flexible scheduling — we manage to output, not hours
- Direct involvement — small team, your input matters
- Base salary: $60,000–$75,000 — depending on experience and credentials
- Profit sharing — you help grow the firm, you share in the upside
- What’s coming as the firm scales:
- Health insurance and expanded benefits
- Leadership opportunities for early team members
- Additional performance-based compensation growth
What You’ll Do
- Tax Preparation (~50–60% of Role)
- Prepare and review individual and business tax returns (1040, 1065, 1120S, 1120, 990) in Drake to a complete, organized, and accurate standard
- Research and apply relevant U.S. Tax Code provisions, elections, and planning strategies
- Identify tax-saving opportunities and flag issues proactively for clients
- Handle IRS and state correspondence, notices, and resolution as needed
- Stay current on tax law changes and communicate impacts to the team and clients
- Client Development & Relationship Management (~20–25% of Role)
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients — build trust, manage expectations, and maintain strong relationships
- Conduct discovery calls and consultations with prospective clients to assess their needs and close new engagements
- Follow up on inbound leads, referrals, and proposals to convert prospects into clients
- Identify upsell and cross-sell opportunities within existing client relationships (e.g., bookkeeping, advisory, tax planning)
- Support creation and refinement of client-facing proposals, marketing materials, and outreach
- Accounting & Bookkeeping Support (~15–20% of Role)
- Review and clean up QuickBooks Online bookkeeping — coding accuracy, balance sheet vs. P&L classification, reconciliations, and general financial hygiene
- Prepare client-ready financial reports (P&L, balance sheet, variances, and supporting schedules)
- Prepare financial statements, budgets, and projections for bookkeeping and advisory clients
- Manage client accounts across QuickBooks, Xero, Drake, and TaxDome
- Firm Operations (~5–10%)
- Draft clear, professional client questions and follow-up requests when information is missing or unclear
- Maintain strong workflow hygiene in TaxDome — update task statuses, document notes/assumptions, and keep work moving without items stalling
- Help improve firm operations by creating and refining SOPs, templates, checklists, and repeatable processes
What You Bring
- Must-Haves
- 3+ years of hands-on experience preparing U.S. federal and state tax returns (individual and business)
- Strong working knowledge of the U.S. Tax Code, entity structures, and common elections/strategies
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Proficiency with Drake Tax Software
- Strong working experience with QuickBooks Online and TaxDome
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data cleanup, reconciliations)
- Comfortable communicating directly with clients — phone, video, and email. You’re the face of the firm to your clients.
- Confident in consultative conversations — you can assess a prospect’s needs, explain our services clearly, and close the engagement
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines in a workflow system
- Nice-to-Haves
- EA (Enrolled Agent) or CPA designation
- Experience with Xero
- Experience with payroll platforms (Gusto, ADP)
- Familiarity with ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Business Central)
- Knowledge of GAAP beyond what’s needed for tax compliance
- Prior experience in a client-facing or business development role at a small firm or practice
- Compensation & Details
- Full-time | Fully remote — U.S.-based candidates only (all 50 states)
- Base salary: $60,000–$75,000/year depending on experience and credentials
- Profit sharing — tied to firm growth and your direct contributions
- Paid time off included
- Benefits expanding as the firm grows — early hires are first in line
If you’re a tax pro who can also hold a client conversation, close a deal, and wants to grow with a firm instead of just work for one — apply now.
