Department BSD SUR - General Surgery: Administration About the Department General surgeons at the University of Chicago Medicine focus on a broad range of diseases, including various types of cancer, endocrine disorders, esophageal diseases, bariatric surgical treatment, breast diseases, and more. In treating this wide bolthires of diseases, our surgeons are also trained to use minimally invasive techniques, including robotic and laparoscopic approaches, to ease the patient’s surgical experience. Our surgeons also work in close collaboration with experts across the hospital to ensure each patient receives the care he or she deserves to achieve optimal outcomes.
The research endeavors by faculty and investigators in the Section of General Surgery are just as wide and varied as the diseases they treat. In addition to their numerous outcomes-based research projects, our investigators are busy with complex basic science questions that will one day allow physicians to deliver better care to all patients. Job Summary: Under minimal supervision, the Project Assistant IV provides highly complex clerical support for the academic, clinical and administrative operations and services of the Section of General Surgery.
May serve as the subject matter expert for other clerical staff. Responsibilities: Provides clerical support for faculty, which includes but is not limited to, calendar management; screening patient calls and requests; preparing and updating patient files in EPIC; scheduling in EPIC, processing and disseminating referring physician letters; coordinating compliance, professional practice evaluations, and credentialing efforts; processing orders on the BuySite purchase order system; processing financial transactions in the GEMS reimbursement system, ePayment system, and ACCTS bolthires transfer system; conducting insurance pre-certifications; and organizing communications with patients.
Provides prompt and efficient resolution to highly complex clerical problems and offers guidance on problem resolution to other clerical support staff. Provides basic educational information to patients and their families about procedures and surgeries. Creates and maintains spreadsheets and databases, and may provide lead support with data entry and data projects. Adapt workflows to accommodate needs, priorities, and fluctuation of patient volumes according to faculty and leadership expectations. Other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience: Five years of office experience required. Hospital or academic medicine experience required. Electronic medical record (EMR) experience preferred. Patient scheduling experience preferred. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Standard Office Environment. Sit for short or extended time periods. Stand for short or extended time periods. Make repetitive wrist, hand or finger movements.
