This is a serious, long-term role supporting the financial operations of a sophisticated U.S. law firm. This position is not compatible with another full-time job, fragmented availability, or casual freelancing.

• Teamwork – We operate as a coordinated firm, not a collection of freelancers. Role Overview We are hiring a Bookkeeper to take ownership of day-to-day bookkeeping and financial operations. This role is foundational. Clean financial data underpins decision-making, compliance, and long-term firm health. You will work closely with firm leadership and our CFO/financial consultant. You are expected to: • Execute accurately • Follow systems precisely • Communicate clearly • Flag issues early rather than hide or workaround them
This is not a clerical data-entry role.
It is an operational role in a firm that takes financial discipline seriously. Core Responsibilities Bookkeeping & Financial Operations • Record and categorize transactions accurately and consistently. • Maintain general ledger integrity. • Perform regular bank and credit card reconciliations. • Track accounts payable and accounts receivable. • Support monthly and quarterly close processes. Law Firm–Specific Support • Assist with trust/IOLTA account tracking and reconciliation (prior exposure strongly preferred).
• Ensure financial records align with billing and timekeeping data. • Maintain organized, audit-ready financial documentation. Reporting & Coordination • Prepare routine internal financial summaries for leadership. • Coordinate with firm leadership and finance consultants. • Identify discrepancies, risks, or process breakdowns and escalate promptly. Required Qualifications • Proven bookkeeping experience (professional services or law firm experience strongly preferred). • Strong grasp of accounting fundamentals (including accrual vs.
cash concepts). • Exceptional attention to detail — accuracy is mandatory. • Clear, professional written and spoken English. • Ability to follow instructions and systems exactly. • Comfort working in a high-expectation, low-hand-holding environment. • Reliable availability during required U.S. Pacific Time hours. Technology & Work Requirements • Reliable high-speed internet. • Computer capable of handling cloud-based accounting systems. • Professional microphone and camera for meetings. • Quiet, distraction-free workspace.
• Mandatory use of Upwork Automatic Time Tracker for all hours worked. • Weekly hourly caps may not be exceeded without prior approval. Engagement Terms • All work is compensated at the agreed-upon hourly rate from day one. • Standard firm documentation required: o Confidentiality Agreement o Nonbinding Term Sheet o Contractor Services Agreement • Contractors are expected to comply fully with firm systems, workflows, and policies. The Bookkeeper will work as part of a broader finance and operations team and will report directly to the firm’s CFO.
This role is not isolated or transactional; it is embedded in the firm’s day-to-day financial and operational rhythm. You will collaborate regularly with leadership, attorneys, and administrative professionals and are expected to integrate fully into a 50+ person, highly professional, globally distributed team. We expect this role to become part of the long-term fabric of the firm—operating with professionalism, reliability, and respect for the standards required in a sophisticated legal organization.
