The Principal Engineer – Data Analytics & Data Science Leader will play a crucial role in shaping the long-term technical strategy, embracing innovation, and providing active expertise as a technical leader for the team.
This position requires a strong methodology, combining direct technical guidance, mentorship, and dynamic support in risk and growth management. Key Responsibilities Leads and coaches a team of specialists, provides technical guidance, shares best practices, and fosters a culture of continuous learning and development.
Adheres to and drives modern software practices through design reviews. Manages system design through distinct interfaces across various components, code reviews, using data/telemetry to inform decisions. Develops "top-tier" engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and components are modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, easily monitored, and reusable. Improves test coverage for services; organizes and implements integration tests; and resolves trouble spots. Ensures testability, compactness/checking, reliability, and practicality; and understands when code is fit to be shared and deployed.
Focuses on business needs through a data-driven approach. Investigates and improves automation, reliability, and monitoring for deployed products. Sets the essential vision for data analysis and reporting, aligning with organizational objectives. Provides leadership in directing the overall course of data analysis technical initiatives. Designs, develops, and optimizes complex data models and reporting structures. Drives the design and implementation of flexible and efficient data analysis and reporting structures.
Ensures the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions by partnering with platforms, data architecture, and administration teams. Defines and implements the long-term technical strategy for data analysis, incorporating technologies and industry trends. Stays up-to-date with emerging technologies and evaluates their relevance to the organization. Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platforms specialists, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions.
Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and skill development. Leads technical leadership meetings, lunch and learn sessions, and contributes to the growth of the engineering community within the organization. Establishes and supports data quality standards and best practices. Implements processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy. Evaluates and selects suitable data analysis and reporting tools to address the needs of the business. Leads requirement meetings and partners closely with platforms and infrastructure groups during the evaluation and implementation of these tools.
Partners with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for data analysis processes, reporting designs, and data models. Monitors the performance of data analysis and reporting systems; and provides technical leadership to drive security and scalability of data products and reporting solutions. Implements measures to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues. Provides strategic insights and recommendations based on data analysis to support decision-making at the organizational level.
Recommends infrastructure upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements. Utilizes Azure services, such as Azure SQL DW, ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Databricks, bolthires-Lake to improve and accelerate delivery of our data products and services. Implements big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization. Essential Qualifications Proven track record with at least 15+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis and reporting roles.
5+ years of experience in leadership or senior roles; demonstrating the ability to effectively guide and lead a team. 5+ years of experience working with Cloud technologies, such as ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Universe DB, DBT, and other big data technologies. Demonstrated advanced proficiency in data analysis tools, languages, ML, and frameworks (e.g., Cosmos, PowerBI, SQL, Python, R). Proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI or similar tools to effectively communicate insights.
Demonstrated expertise in working with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure or bolthires Cloud, to design and implement flexible and efficient data analysis solutions. In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for effective and scalable data management. Advanced SQL skills. Strong understanding of relational databases and business data warehouse to write complex SQL queries against multiple data sources. Experience managing high-volume and high-velocity data streams, and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near real-time analysis.
Experience in shaping the essential vision for data analysis and reporting initiatives within an organization. Effective management of data analysis projects, including planning, execution, and delivery. Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices. Demonstrated ability to assume ownership and responsibility of critical issues and close them to resolution. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Science or related technical discipline.
Relevant industry certifications are an plus. Experience in retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, supply chain.
